Studio Introduction

This studio will examine the environment and issues of ecological sustainability and reducing the carbon impact of the building industry by providing green solutions and environmentally friendly designs. The study aims at addressing both the global concerns of the millennium as well as the local conditions.
We will reflect on what constitutes sound environmental strategies, and present environmental solutions that range from architectural planning to tectonic details. The design solution must satisfy the spatial and structural design principle and consider light conditions, air quality and relation to outdoors.

We will proceed by analyzing precedents and local conditions and concerns and present solutions. Whether based on traditions or innovative approaches the design must represent clear position on issues outlined.

Brief:
Educational concepts about architecture have changed dramatically over the years. Today the architecture of educational institutions must provide appropriate settings for learning.
AAST-Cairo will build a new School of Architecture and Arts in New Cairo. The facilities should match thoughts and ideas that reflect ideals of teaching and learning for architects and artists involved with the built environment.
The school must provide an opportunity to use ecological sustainable solutions as well as provide appropriate conditions and accommodate the environment of "learning and experimenting".

Issues & Themes:

1- We will focus on the following:

- the environment of learning
- The relation to site, open spaces/landscape and urban context
- climatic factors: orientation, sun and wind

2- Concept formulation will start with an investigation of issues such as:
- Skin & Bones
- Boundary & Space
- In/out and transition

3- Continuous explorations of the following architectural themes are also encouraged:
- Boundaries / envelope
- Folds
- Layers
- Porosity
- Transparency
- Flexibility
